Jackson’s District 9 tops box office

The first-time director and cast of unknowns of the acclaimed science-fiction thriller District 9 have given Hollywood a box-office boost.

The Sony release produced by Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson has opened at No 1 at the United States box office, leading with a US$37 million debut, according to studio estimates.

District 9 is the debut feature from commercial and music-video director Neill Blomkamp, who co-wrote the tale about extraterrestrials forced by humans to live in squalor in a ghetto in South Africa.

The movie built audience interest with a clever marketing campaign playing up the theme of prejudice against aliens, including posters instructing citizens to report non-humans and ads on bus benches stating that the seats are for humans only.

“Everybody was like, ‘What is this?’ There was a big question mark in people’s minds,” said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony. “It did really pique their interest and drove them to the Internet and elsewhere to discover what’s going on.”
The previous weekend’s No. 1 movie, Paramount’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, slipped to second place with $22.5 million, raising its 10-day total to $98.8 million.

Another sci-fi tale, the Warner Bros. romance The Time Traveler’s Wife starring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams, opened a solid No. 3 with $19.2 million. The film joined the previous weekend’s Julie & Julia as a choice for women, with females accounting for 76 per cent of its audience.

District 9 and Time Traveler’s Wife led a wave of five new wide releases for mid-August, when Hollywood’s summer output normally is petering out. The rush continues next weekend with another surge of new releases, led by Quentin Tarantino’s World War II saga Inglourious Basterds starring Brad Pitt.

“It’s getting very crowded, and it’s these films that want to compete in the (northern) summer time frame but can’t compete in the sweet spot of summer,” said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. “Opening District 9 against Star Trek, that would not be a good strategy. But to release it now makes sense. August is the month of opportunity for films that in other months of summer would get slaughtered.”

The weekend’s other debuts: Paramount Vantage’s used-car comedy The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard, opening at No. 6 with $5.4 million; Disney’s animated adventure Ponyo from animation master Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away), coming in at No. 9 with $3.5 million; and Summit Entertainment’s teen rock ‘n’ roll tale Bandslam, which tanked at No. 13 with just $2.3 million despite a cast that includes Vanessa Hudgens of High School Musical.

It was Hollywood’s second weekend in a row of rising revenues after a monthlong slide compared with summer 2008, when the Batman blockbuster The Dark Knight was smashing box-office records.

Overall receipts came in at $142 million, up 14 per cent from the same weekend a year ago, when Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder debuted at No. 1 with $25.8 million.

Revenues since the northern summer season opened the first weekend of May are at $3.77 billion, just a fraction below where Hollywood was last summer, according to Hollywood.com.

Factoring in higher ticket prices, admissions are off 4 per cent compared to summer 2008, though movie attendance remains strong given how The Dark Knight dominated a year ago. The biggest blockbuster since Titanic, The Dark Knight topped out with a domestic haul of $531 million.

“Considering we had a movie of that magnitude in the mix, I think this summer has held up very well for itself,” said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner Bros., which released The Dark Knight.

Actress Angelina Jolie was joined by her boyfriend Brad Pitt as she signed autographs in London’s Leicester Square before the British premiere of her new movie Beowulf.Jolie, whose thin frame was covered by black leather trousers and a tight sweater, signed autographs and chatted with some of the hundreds of fans outside the theatre.

It’s so, so nice to see all these fans here, it always is,” she told reporters.

“I haven’t been here for a little bit. I lived here for a few years, and I do plan to come back more often.”

Jolie appeared relaxed and happy, despite getting one of her black Christian Louboutin stilleto heels stuck in chewing gum on the red carpet.

Pitt, dressed in a grey flat-cap, refused to steal the limelight, telling reporters “I’m off duty tonight.”

Beowulf co-stars Sir Anthony Hopkins and Ray Winstone also showed up for the premiere.

Stunning Jaime Pressly has laid to rest rumours she was used as a body double for Drew Barrymore in Poison Ivy.The My Name is Earl actress says she was mistakenly thought to have been the naked stand-in for Drew, who never appears in the sequel, because stills of Jaime were used in the second film.

She told Playboy magazine: “Drew plays Ivy in the first Poison Ivy film, and in Poison Ivy 2 Alyssa Milano plays the art student who moves into Ivy’s old room in a house with other students.

“She finds a diary and pictures of Drew’s character in a closet. The pictures are supposed to be of Drew, but they’re of me, though you never see my face.

“When Alyssa reads Ivy’s diary – Drew’s diary – she imagines her, but instead of Ivy being Drew, she’s me.

“People say I body-doubled her and it was my boobs and my ass in the movie instead of hers, but that isn’t the case.

“I haven’t had a body double myself, but I’m not opposed to it.”

Actress Julia Roberts Gave Birth to Baby Boy

The actress gave birth to her third child with cinematographer husband Daniel Moder Monday June 18th. The newly born, a baby boy named Henry Daniel Moder, weighed 8 1/2 pounds.The star’s rep, Marcy Engelman, confirmed the good news, saying Henry was born at a Los Angeles hospital. “The Moder family is doing great,” the representative said.

Julia and Daniel got married on July 4, 2002. They have had twins, daughter Hazel Patricia and son Phinnaeus Walter, who were born on November 28, 2004.

Julia will next be seen in the drama movie “Charlie Wilson’s War”, slated to hit the theaters by Christmas. By next year, the movie beauty will star in the drama “Fireflies in the Garden”, being in the same scene with Carrie-Anne Moss and Ryan Reynoldsamong others.

The ‘Addams Family’ star, who plays nymphomaniac Rae in ‘Black Snake Moan’, got into character by stripping off in front of the cast and crew.
Christina said: “I needed to lose any sort of self-consciousness because I feel sometimes you can see self-consciousness in a performance when somebody is naked or in a nude scene.
“I really needed for that not to be there, so to help me I stayed the way I would be for the scene all the time – in order to get the crew really used to seeing me that way. Not only was I comfortable, but I could look at anybody’s face and see they were comfortable. “It was really necessary for the crew to be used to me undressed because I was playing someone who places no value on her body. She has no regard for herself so she wouldn’t care if she were clothed or not.” The 27-year-old became so used to being naked she was still walking around undressed after filming finished.
She said: “It was kind of funny because, you know, I’m a prude and I do not like walking around naked.
“I was in my bathroom about two months after the movie finished and I was brushing my teeth and I was in my underwear. I looked down and it was like, ‘Oh, god, put something on.’ “And then I just stopped and thought, ‘Oh my god, I was half naked for two months and my ass was on camera.’ ”
